A Free Tool for Renters: The Rental Home Hunting Dashboard
Hunting for a rental is exhausting. You tour three houses in one afternoon, scroll a dozen listings on your phone at night, and by the end of the week every property starts to blur together. Was it the one on Squirrel Road that allowed pets, or the one near Madison Square that had the cheaper deposit? Did anyone actually call you back?
That's why we built the Rental Home Hunting Dashboard — a free, side-by-side comparison worksheet you can copy into your own Notion workspace in one click.
What's Inside
The dashboard is a single sortable table built to capture every fact that matters when you're comparing rentals. Each row is one home you're seriously considering. The columns include:
- Address — the property you toured or inquired on.
- Features — bedrooms, bathrooms, floor, garage, parking, appliances, lease term.
- Price, security deposit, and application fee — so you can see the true upfront cost at a glance.
- Square footage — to compare value, not just price.
- Contact / Listing Agent / Landlord and phone number — keep the real point-of-contact attached to each home.
- Available move-in date — match it against your lease end or job start date.
- Verified — a checkbox to mark the homes where you've confirmed the listing agent through TheListingAgentFinder.com.
- Pets allowed and notes — for everything else that doesn't fit a column.
Why "Verified" Is the Most Important Column
The dashboard isn't just a notes app — it's a defense system. The single most common rental scam in 2026 looks like this: a scammer copies a real listing onto Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or Lemon8, drops the rent by $400, and asks for a deposit before you tour.
The "Verified" checkbox is there to force you to pause and confirm: is the person I'm talking to actually the listing agent of record? Use the address in our app or on the website to find the verified listing agent, then call them. If their name and number match what you've been given, check the box. If they don't, that row should never become a deposit.
We dive deeper into how this scam works in The Anatomy of a Craigslist & Facebook Marketplace Rental Scam and the recovery steps in The Rental Scam Recovery Checklist.
How to Get Your Own Copy
- Open the dashboard using the button below.
- In the upper-right corner of the Notion page, click the Duplicate icon (the small double-square icon). This copies the entire dashboard into your own free Notion workspace so you can edit it privately.
- Start filling in candidates as you tour. We strongly recommend opening it in a desktop or laptop browser, or on a tablet (like an iPad) — the table is wide and works much better with a real screen than on a phone.
Built for Renters, From a Realtor
I'm a licensed Realtor, and I built this dashboard because too many of the renters I talk to are losing deposits — or worse, their identity — because they were juggling five listings in their text messages and couldn't keep the legitimate landlord straight from the scammer. A simple table, used consistently, fixes most of that.
